Abstract: Cybernetic Bookshelf is a collection of ebook I have been acquiring since 2020. Initially, it was collected as learning resource for a Masters level course I teach at the Australian National University. The Bookshelf has now grown to over 700 titles, span over 70 plus years. While the initial motivation was purely pedagogical, it has now become a research project - an experiment in human-machine collaboration. More importantly, the “epistemic affordance” of a “collection” seems to generate meaning (with the help of human and machine) that transcends individual items within the collection. This is perhaps another instance of what may be termed "emergent phenomena”.
